Owner and Founder, Academyhills
President and Chief Executive Officer,
Mori Building Co., Ltd.
Today, as we welcome the 21st century, our driving need is attraction or magnetism. Everything we produce, including culture and the arts, is produced by people. To attract people, it is essential for a city to have distinctive appeal; only in this way can it hope to lead in the 21st century. We must hold human emotion and sensitivity paramount, and focus our cities around cultural, lifestyle-oriented central districts. Completed in spring 2003, Roppongi Hills is centered on the education and research base of Academyhills and the Mori Arts Center museum and exhibition space, which we trust will blossom like a well-tended garden into the centerpiece of an attractive community. Academyhills continues to create systems and businesses for the new age, through collaborations that cross the boundaries of industry and genre, but we also intend to make it a world intellectual hub and a new stage for the 21st century. |

Chairman, Academyhills; Dean Emeritus, ARK Toshijuku
Professor, Waseda University
In September 1988, ARK Toshijuku was established.
Its educational philosophy, based on a combination of cooperation and self-reliance by its pupils, was to confront the leading problems in the fields of urban information systems, design, and environment.
ARK Academyhills was formed to encompass a variety of new research and educational programs, while keeping ARK Toshijuku at its center.
Today, Academyhills is proud to be one of Tokyo's most forward-thinking educational and research institutions. ARK Toshijuku's founder, Taikichiro Mori, always used to say, "The creativity needed for the city of the future will be born where sensitivity and intelligence are brought together." With this as our guiding principle, we hope to make ARK Academyhills more than a place for burnishing one's intelligence, a place where generational and cultural walls are broken through, and where students acquire a cultured and fertile sensibility. |

Professor Emeritus, University of Tokyo
Academyhills, the embodiment of a highly advanced information space, is a completely new type of urban "apparatus." The educational and research activities that have been fervently pursued at ARK Toshijuku since its founding in 1988 have had a significant impact on the worlds of both business and academia, serving as a successful prototype of collaboration in creating continuing educational programs. ARK Toshijuku's starting point was the desire to find a better way, which soon became the challenge of creating a new school through trial and error. In this age of violent change, the concept of "completion" has become unrealistic, we seek out prototypes for the new age. At Academyhills, unsurpassed throughout the world as a place for trend setting activities, we hope to go beyond the traditional boundaries of industry and academia, and seek out dynamic new challenge. |

We stand now at the edge of an abyss, with people all over the world dismissing Japan as "a great country, once upon a time." If you find yourself asking what Academyhills can do to help the situation, I humbly suggest that you visit us and see for yourself. However, before you arrive here at Academyhills, which alone among the many so-called "professional schools" does not even give grades, you must prepare yourself. Not to memorize and manipulate text and electronic information, but rather to have your creativity and your self-confidence completely rewritten-reset, as it were. Here you will cease underestimating yourself, and together with people who are leaping headlong into the new world, you will write the story of the 21st century. Suddenly, you will find yourself in the major leagues, playing on a world-class level. We can change the world! |

Adviser, Academyhills Steering Committee
Professor Emeritus, Keio University
Adviser, Mori Building Co., Ltd.
ARK Toshijuku was developed in 1988 with five values at its core: self-motivation, future vision, collaboration, practice and self-confidence. Academyhills has inherited these values and incorporated them into a unique learning environment. With "self-study, self-learning" as its motto, Academyhills will be a place for creative, open-minded people of all ages, genders, professions and nationalities to resonate with and learn from one another. The 21st century is shaping up to be quite different from its predecessor. The knowledge that is presently locked up within government, academia and industry will begin to spread, becoming borderless... We hope Academy hills will be a base for this new human exchange. |
