January 16 - Fifth "Academyhills/Georgetown University/Columbia University Mori Special Lecture"Columbia University joined the lecture series, with videoconference links to three locations. The topic of discussion was "Foreign Economic Policy of the New American Administration:Toward a Focus on the Problems of Japanese-American Commerce." Participants on the Japanese side included Heizo Takenaka, Jiro Tamura, Hidejiro Urata (Professor, Waseda University), and Motohisa Furukawa (Member, House of Representatives, National Diet of Japan);participants on the American side included Arthur Alexander (Adjunct Professor, Georgetown University School of Foreign Service), Edward Graham (Senior Fellow, Institute for International Economics), Eric Altbach(Regional Economic Analyst, U.S. Department of State Bureau of Intelligence and Research), Hugh Patrick (Professor, Columbia University) and Merit Janow (Professor, Columbia University). February 5  - "CMnet Management Council" Inaugural MeetingA demonstration of the CMnet website(a web-based open market for contracting construction work), and seminar on "The Possibilities of an Open Marketplace for Architecture." Seiichiro Yonekura served as coordinator; panelists included Takuya Ishikawa(Assistant Manager, Bidding System Planning Office, Policy Bureau Construction Division, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport), Jiro Kokuryo, Tadasu Ohe, and Yasuyuu Ito (Managing Director, Mori Building Co., Ltd.). April 19 - ARK Toshijuku Started Its 26th Session A new course on Business Innovation: Researching Corporate Strategy was added to the curriculum, instructed by Seiichiro Yonekura. June 21 - eHills Corporation Established The "eHills Club," a membership-based area portal site established in cooperation with Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Inc., began experimental operations. June 29 - "Latest Real Estate Business Lectures" CD-ROM & Sub-notebook Went On Sale Educational CD-ROMs, containing lectures on business practices in the real estate industry, produced by ARK Toshijuku for individual home study. Instructed by ARK Toshijuku's real estate business course teacher, Masakuni Tamura (CEO, ArcBrain Inc.). July 16 - ARK Toshijuku Special Seminar: "The 'Smart Growth' Approach to Urban Development" A seminar on the "smart growth" urban development concept that had received much attention in the United States. Lecturer:Richard Rosan (President, Urban Land Institute). July 30 - "CMnet Management Council Final Report" A seminar on "Dealing with the Expectation of Electronic Procurement in an Open Marketplace," featuring coordinator Jiro Kokuryo and panelists Tatsuyuki Kose(Deputy Director for Financial System, Policy Bureau Construction Industry Promotion Division, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport), Kyoichi Suzuki (Shimizu Corporation Construction Department e-Business Project Group), Takeshi Nakawake (Nihon Sekkei Management Solutions Inc.), John Dixon (Bovis Lend Lease Japan) and Yasuyuu Ito. November 19 - University of Tokyo Advanced Technology Business Center Established Housed in Roppongi 25 Mori Building, the Center was founded as a base for collaboration between industry and academia. Takashi Nanya (Professor, University of Tokyo Advanced Technology Research Center) served as the director. November 20-22 - University of Tokyo Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology "Symposium: Advanced Science and Technology Industry-University Collaboration" Speakers include Koji Omi (Minister, Science and Technology Policy), Takeshi Sasaki (President, University of Tokyo), Takashi Nanya, Toshiya Watanabe (Professor, University of Tokyo Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology), Shuji Nakamura (Professor, University of California at Santa Barbara), Michitaka Hirose, and Minoru Mori. |

March 16 - ARK Toshijuku Fashion Atelier Fashion Show Fashion show and exhibition of work by students completing courses at the Fashion Atelier, attracted more than 400 visitors to the ROPPONGI THINK ZONE venue. March 25 - Graduation Ceremony for ARK Toshijuku 27th Session; Special Event: "'A Theater of wisdom' Five Key Factors for Japan's Rebirth-The Next Age is Ours to Create" Held at the Atago Green Hills Mori Tower. Five live sessions discussing the respective topics: "On Japanese Cultural Strategies," "Creating Lifestyles," "The Challenge of Urban Revitalization," "Future of the Real Estate Business" and "A World Carved Out by Innovation." April 7 - "BS Academyhills Nippon Future Vision of Japan Map" Went on Air Launch of business information program exploring the direction Japan should take in the 21st century, with Seiichiro Yonekura,Tadasu Ohe and Motoshige Itoh as navigators. The first episode featured a discussion by Messrs. Yonekura, Ohe and Itoh on the topic of "Cities and Regions." April 16 - First Meeting of the Trademark Tokyo Project Committee Launched to develop proposals for the cultural strategy that would position Tokyo as a cultural hub, and allow Japan to disseminate culture (of which it can be proud) as a form of industry to the world, in anticipation of the 2003 completion of Roppongi Hills. April 22 - ARK Toshijuku Started Its 28th Session Featured a comprehensive program of business courses including "Business Innovation" taught by Seiichiro Yonekura, "Business Economics School" by Motoshige Itoh, and "Planning Toolbox" by Kenichiro Senoh. 28th SessionFrom this session onward the "graduation ceremony" has been styled as a "commencement ceremony," in the hope that graduating from ARK Toshijuku will not be an end for students, but the beginning or commencement of something new. Lecture on "Communication is Oxygen for the Heart" (Satoshi Fukushima, Assistant Professor, University of Tokyo Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology). was given by students of the 27th session to those of the 28th session. September 24 - ARK Toshijuku "Seminar for Human Resource Development / Training Staff\The People Needed Now" Part 1: "The Ark Toshijuku Vision of Human Resource Development" by Seiichiro Yonekura; Part 2: "Basic Intellectual Capabilities of Businesspeople"; Part 3: "Q&A/Informal Discussion" by Junjiro Takahashi. October 24 - ARK Toshijuku Started Its 29th Session New courses: "The Economics of Urban Revitalization" instructed by Kikuo Iwata (Professor, Gakushuin University Faculty of Economics) and Fukuju Yamazaki (Professor, Sophia University Faculty of Economics); "Commercial Strategies for Urban Development" instructed byYukio Togo (President, Step One Japan Service Inc.); "Facility Management" instructed by Toshiaki Matsuoka (President, Matsuoka Research Institute/management consultant). - Commemorative Lecture for the ARK Toshijuku 29th Session Entrance Ceremony: "Creativity Arises from Adversity\Message from Tadao Ando, Human Being." Lecturer: Tadao Ando; coordinator: Seiichiro Yonekura. October 16-26 - Tokyo Art, Architecture & Design Studio held "Lumen City/New Optics for the City" Exhibition of Work from its First Session. Showcasing the work of students from the first session of the Tokyo AAD Studio. Symposia and public judging also held over this time; altogether the exhibition attracted more than 1,000 visitors. November 6 - University of Tokyo Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology "Open School for Fostering Advanced Human Resources and Intellectual Property" Lectures ran for four months at Academyhills until February 2003. December 5  - Roppongi Hills Press PresentationClose to 600 members of the media and a number of educators involved with Academyhills gathered on the 40F of the Roppongi Hills Mori Tower. Included a tour of Roppongi Academyhills(Mori Tower 49F). |
